Hemp Based Building Materials Pilot
A small scale, code aware demonstration focused on hemp based materials in Hawaii. Education first. Clear documentation. Practical outcomes.
Seeking architects, builders, and institutional partners interested in a small scale hemp based building materials pilot.
This pilot exists to test feasibility and document constraints. It is not a housing development and not a commercial sales project.
Overview
Purpose
Establish a small scale pilot to evaluate hemp based building materials in Hawaii, with an initial focus on hemp hurd lime composite, often referred to as hempcrete.
Why this matters
Hawaii needs alternatives that reduce import dependence and support lower impact construction. The missing piece is local data and a practical example.
What this is not
Not residential housing. Not a commercial product rollout. Not a shortcut around building codes.
Scope
Initial pilot formats
We will start with a low risk format such as a non load bearing wall assembly, demonstration wall, or a small accessory or agricultural structure.
Materials and sourcing
Initial material may be imported to reduce early risk. Local cultivation is a future consideration, not a requirement for the pilot.
Documentation first
We will document material origin, mix approach, labor inputs, costs, and lessons learned so future projects start smarter.
Exclusions. No occupied residential structure. No load bearing structural system. No retail sales of buildings or material through this pilot.
Objectives
Code and permitting clarity
Identify what building departments and design professionals need to see for confidence and approvals.
Constructability in Hawaii
Evaluate how the method performs with Hawaii humidity, weather, labor, and logistics.
Cost and labor tracking
Track time, labor roles, material costs, and realistic steps to repeat the process.
Deliverables
Pilot summary report
A written summary of what we did, what worked, what did not, and what should happen next.
Photo documentation
Step by step photos and notes for mixing, placement, curing, and finishing.
Stakeholder ready lessons
A simple set of takeaways for builders, designers, educators, and regulators to reference.
Partners needed
Architect or designer
Help choose a pilot format and outline a code aware approach for the wall or structure.
Licensed contractor or builder
Support build planning, labor coordination, and safe site execution.
Engineer or building science advisor
Review details, identify risks, and suggest simple tests or documentation to increase confidence.
We are also seeking an educational or institutional partner to support credibility, testing, and workforce development.
Get involved
Who should reach out
Architects, engineers, builders, material suppliers, educators, and property owners open to hosting a small demonstration.
What to include
Your island, your role, your availability, and what you would need to see to feel comfortable participating.
What happens next
We schedule a short call, confirm a pilot format, and align on requirements before any public announcements.
